Fatal Crash Today on Howard Frankland Bridge: One Dead, Several Injured
A tragic collision late Monday night on the Howard Frankland Bridge has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, drawing the attention of emergency crews and causing significant traffic disruption. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a 37-year-old man from Musella, Georgia, driving a Chevrolet Silverado, entered a closed lane in an active construction zone on the southbound lanes of Interstate-275, south of mile marker 34, and collided with a parked Ford F-550 work vehicle. The Georgia driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Ford F-550, operated by a Tampa construction crew, was struck by the Silverado, and three workers were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Debris from the crash also struck a third vehicle, driven by an 18-year-old man from Largo, though he was not injured.
The incident has highlighted the dangers of construction zones, with officials stressing the importance of following lane closures and reducing speed to ensure the safety of both workers and fellow drivers. The crash investigation is ongoing as troopers gather evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the deadly collision.
Traffic in the area was significantly impacted, with lane closures for emergency response and cleanup causing delays during peak travel times. Motorists were urged to seek alternate routes and to drive with caution when approaching the bridge.
As construction activities continue in the area, drivers are reminded to stay alert and follow all work zone instructions to prevent future accidents. Authorities have promised additional updates as further details of the investigation are released.
